A FAMILY UPDATE

Thursday, March 22, 2018
Things have been a little quiet on the blog but I'm hoping to write more since we're in more of a schedule with Lucy. We are over halfway through March and spring is definitely in the air. Its been rainy but there have been some warmer days that promise spring is right around the corner. Out tulips are starting to pop up and the lawn is looking greener everyday. I can't wait to be able to take Lucy out in the warmer weather. So here's a little bit about where we are at!

LUCY
Lucy is about 4 months old now and is changing so much. Shes getting close to growing out of her 0-3 month clothing and is slowly getting chubbier. I love her tiny rolls; I cant handle it! Right now she loves to grunt and sound just like a little pig when she talks to us. She's figuring out how to use her hands and is so so grabby. She'll take hold of anything she can. Since shes figuring out how to control her hands they are constantly in her mouth. Usually both of them at the same time. She's started to giggle just a little and I'm sure that any day we're going to hear her laughing.

DALLIN
We have loved this winter and spending time with our favorite guy. Dallin is going to be getting busier with work and I'm really not excited about it. Lucy and I are really going to miss him coming home at 5 every day. Little Lucy might not see him at all some days when things get really busy and he's out late. I love watching him interact and play with Lucy. You can tell that she adores him. Time with him is becoming more and more precious. We sure love him.

ME
I've been doing pretty good now that Lucy has a better schedule. I've been able to keep up with the house (which honestly I love doing and makes me so happy) and spend a little time doing things I want to. I've realized since becoming a mom that I cant just be a mom. I had it in my head that as soon as I became a mom I could feel fulfilled. However that is not the case. While I love my daughter and am so grateful to be her mother, i still need to pursue my passions. I've been brainstorming what I really like to do and figured I really like interior design. Decorating my home and doing home decor projects really makes me happy. Now i'm just figuring out where to go with that. A blog? Selling home decor or furniture that I've made? Decorating consultations? I'm not sure what direction to head yet but I'm going there.

We love being a family of three and enjoy having Lucy in our home. She brings us so much joy and not a day goes by that we aren't smiling. We cherish the time that we have together even though its not always easy being parents. Our lives are so different now but we wouldn't change it.

A Post Where We Look Back On the Past 1/3 of Lucy's First Year and I Share Too Much.

We are a third of the way through Lucy's first year of life and I can't believe its only been 4 months. At the same time I'm can't believe its already been 4 months. Feels like yesterday we were coming home from the hospital.

The past four months could be described in so many ways. Beautiful, challenging, life changing, joyful, happy, hard, long, emotional, rewarding, painful and perfect. Despite the roller coaster these four months were, it has been ever so worth it. I want to take a look back at the past four months and talk about it. I feel like I can now that I'm getting more adjusted to motherhood and feel like I can catch my breath.

Since Lucy arrived, my life was turned upside down. Not much, if anything, has stayed the same. That's not to say that its bad but I was definitely shook. I no longer had time to myself, I had so much more responsibilities and I was definitely overwhelmed. The first three weeks were difficult. Coming home from the hospital was a shock. I was in pain, extremely exhausted and needed about five days of sleep. Thank goodness my mom was there to help us out, especially with breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding was so much harder than I could have imagined. Before Lucy arrived  I thought it would be so natural and beautiful and that we would have no problems. It was SO HARD. It seemed like Lucy hated it. It took the help of a couple nurses and my mom working for an hour to even get to to latch in the hospital. Then she wouldn't eat well once she was on. Lucy lost too much weight and so I started pumping after every feed. I hated pumping but at least it didn't scream at me. Eventually we had to supplement her with donated breastmilk. It hurt me so deeply because I felt like I wasn't good enough for her. However at that point we'd been in the hospital for 3 days and I was too tired to disagree. I continued to pump when we got home after every feed. I had grown to despise breastfeeding. I would sit down and get ready to feed her and as soon as i laid her down she began to scream. She cried, I cried and the whole ordeal lasted an hour and a half to two hours. Finally I decided I couldn't do it and we fed her breastmilk from a bottle. It was honestly heartbreaking and I've never felt so guilty in my entire life. Later the guilt faded into relief. I felt like I could breath again. I continued to pump until she was two months old. I hated every minute of it and was dealing with the worst pain that never went away. I then got mastitis and that was the last straw. Mastitis was miserable but it made me realize that I was already miserable. Pumping was taking a huge toll on my mental health and I felt so weighed down. So I quit. Switching to formula was the best decision I could have made for me and for Dallin and for Lucy. I was happy, Dallin enjoyed a happy wife again, and I was finally able to feel like I was bonding with Lucy. Life was 10 times better.

Well I really didn't plan on sharing all that but the words just kept coming so there you go, my breastfeeding experience. Being parents has been so hard and so rewarding and so great. The first three weeks were probably the hardest due to lack of sleep, a lot of doctors appointments (she had a hard time gaining the weight back) and a very colicky baby. For about a week straight Lucy would scream and cry non stop from 5 to almost midnight. Eventually that faded and she started sleeping four hour stretches, then five and six and now she sleeps about six hour stretches every night followed by a couple more hours after eating. Sleep is glorious. I have never loved climbing into bed more than the past four months. We had a lot of help those first couple months. Our parents were awesome. They would come and let us get some sleep and take turns with little Lucy.

Right now things are going well. I feel like we're adjusting. We have a good routine and that is so nice. Lucy is a champ and takes great naps throughout the day and we couldn't ask for a better sleeper at night. We will take a 6/7 hour stretch! Every morning she wakes around 5 to eat before sleeping a couple more hours. After this I usually workout and do my scripture reading and prayers for the day. Then I'm able to fix breakfast for Dallin and I before she even wakes up. During her naps I usually clean and am able to do most of the things I need to. We have it pretty good right now, especially since she is usually such a happy baby when she's awake.

It's been incredible to watch Lucy grow and see her little personality come through. When she was little itty bity she always had her lips in a little O shape and it was the cutest. She loved to cuddle. Then she started to smile which was so so fun. We spent all our time trying to get her to smile even though it took another few week for it to become a regular thing. She started getting excited and kicking her legs. Now she squeals and talks all the time through her little grunts. She is so focused trying to use her hands and has just started wanting to roll over.

I feel good about our little family and I love that there are three of us now. She brings so much to our family and we couldn't have asked for more perfect baby girl. She is truly perfect for us and all the sleepless nights so far have been worth it. She is so special and we are incredibly blessed to experience the roller coaster of parenthood with her.

Different But Good

1/30/18
Our lives are so different that they were a couple months ago and far more different than they were a year ago. Different can be hard. It can be challenging. However different can also be so so good. Our lives are great; we are blessed and have a beautiful little baby but it's also hard and challenging. There are bad days but there are also really really good days.

Lucy brings so much joy into our home. She is the center of our lives right now and we are so excited about her growth and changes. It was so fun when she first started smiling and it's beginning to happen more and more. She's also starting to listen to us and watch our face more intently. Lucy has become more interested in us and what we are doing. She has also gotten quite expressive in her face  and when she tries to "talk." She has the cutest little squeal and like to "yell" at us when she's hungry. Lucy doesn't cry a whole lot but she definitely lets us know when something is up. Maybe I'm biased but I think she's the cutest baby I've ever seen.

I used to have hours and hours to myself to get the house clean, do laundry or even lay around. Now my time is spent changing diapers, feeding Lucy and holding her when she fusses. I've definitely learned how to utilize nap time. I feel like I am actually more productive with my time now than I was before. I have to be or nothing would get done! However, even if I don't get any housework done I still feel accomplished every day because I take care of Lucy. Being a mother has given me a purpose and I love that! I'm exhausted and always busy but I wouldn't have it any other way; at least not most of the time, haha!

Dallin is such a great dad. I love watching him interact with her and get excited about her little smiles. He is so good to help out with her and does just as much as I do. It's definitely a team effort. Lucy loves him just as much as he loves her. One day he got home and she was napping in my arms. We talked for a little and she started to stir. By the time she had her eyes open, Dallin had gone to the kitchen. She immediately started to fuss. Dallin came back over to the living room and as soon as she saw him she started to grin and was perfectly content when he picked her up. She knew he was home! She's definitely a Daddy's girl.

We love our little Lucy Paige and are slowly adjusting to this whole parenting gig. I feel like we'll always be adjusting. I'm learning to embrace this life as we learn the ropes and learn from our mistakes. I love my little family of three and am so blessed to experience this life with them.
